He was born in Paris, France on February 4, 1940. At the end of April in 1941: during a raid, the police arrive at the Gattegno's house. His father, who had put the Spanish flag on his balcony, shows his Spanish papers, which saves them from possible arrest, but it is a sign: they must think about leaving Paris and go underground. That same year they made all the necessary arrangements, but the application of Circular No. 11, which prohibited Argentine consuls in Europe from issuing visas to Jews, had become so strict that they decided to try to emigrate to Uruguay, from where, once they had obtained the identity card, it would be easy for them to enter Argentina legally.
In May 1941 the family leaves by car from Bécon-les-Bruyères to Le Mans. In June they moved from Le Mans to Perpignan. When they arrive in Perpignan, André, in poor health since birth, is seriously ill. His grandmother, a connoisseur of the secrets of Sephardic folk medicine, cures him of an acute intestinal intoxication. The family leaves Perpignan for Spain, crossing the border without any problems thanks to the Turkish passports of the grandparents and Diane, and the Spanish passports of the Gattegnos. Approximately September 15, they arrive in Barcelona and a few days later take the boat to Montevideo.
The family stays in Montevideo for a year with their Uruguayan identity card.
January 11, 1943 the Gattegno family leaves Montevideo for Buenos Aires.

Nace en Paris, Francia el 4 de febrero de 1940. A finales de abril en 1941: durante una redada, la policía llega a casa de los Gattegno. Su padre, que había puesto la bandera española en su balcón, muestra su documentación española, lo que les salva de una posible detención, pero es una señal: deben pensar en abandonar París y pasar a la clandestinidad. Ese mismo año hicieron todos los trámites necesarios, pero la aplicación de la circular nº 11, que prohibía a los cónsules argentinos en Europa expedir visados a los judíos, se había vuelto tan estricta que decidieron intentaran emigrar a Uruguay, desde donde, una vez obtenido el documento de identidad, les sería fácil entrar legalmente en Argentina.
En mayo de 1941 la familia parte en coche de Bécon-les-Bruyères hacia Le Mans. En junio se mueven de Le Mans a Perpiñán. Cuando llegan a Perpiñán, André, de salud delicada desde su nacimiento, está gravemente enfermo. Su abuela, conocedora de los secretos de la medicina popular sefardí, le cura de una intoxicación intestinal aguda. La familia abandona Perpiñán con destino a España, cruzando la frontera sin problemas gracias a los pasaportes turcos de los abuelos y de Diane, y a los pasaportes españoles de los Gattegnos. 15 de septiembre aproximadamente, llegan a Barcelona y unos días más tarde toman el barco hacia Montevideo.
La familia permanece en Montevideo durante un año con su documento de identidad uruguayo.
11 de enero de 1943 la familia Gattegno abandona Montevideo con destino a Buenos Aires.
